Major card and payments changes you need to know (June 2025 update)

1) AmEx Gold Charge Card — No more fuel rewards

Effective date: 12 June 2025
What changed: American Express Gold Charge Card will stop awarding Membership Rewards (MR) points on fuel transactions (petrol, diesel, CNG) at OMCs from 12 June 2025.
Why it matters: If you were using fuel spends to meet the ₹1,000 monthly threshold to get 6X rewards, you’ll lose that route — you’ll need a replacement spend category or card to hit the multiplier.

Voiceover / Host (V.O.):

“As mentioned earlier, the American Express Gold Charge Card will stop awarding Membership Rewards points on fuel transactions. From 12 June 2025, you won’t earn MR points on petrol, diesel, or CNG payments at OMCs. If you were using fuel spends to hit your 6X on ₹1,000 monthly threshold, you’ll need a new strategy.”

2) HDFC Bank Tata Neu Infinity — Lounge access revamp

Effective date: 10 June 2025
What changed: Tata Neu Infinity cardholders can no longer swipe directly at airport lounges. Instead, lounge access is moved to quarterly spend-based vouchers — cardholders earn vouchers only after hitting specific quarterly spending milestones.
Impact: Encourages higher on-card spends to unlock lounge access; direct swipe convenience is gone.

Voiceover:

“Effective 10 June 2025, Tata Neu Infinity cardholders can’t swipe directly at airport lounges. Instead, you earn lounge vouchers based on quarterly spending milestones—pushing you to swipe more to unlock access.”

3) RBI actions & digital-wallet review — regulatory watchlist

3.1 Penalties

  • Deutsche Bank AG, India: penalty of ₹50 lakh

  • Yes Bank: penalty of ₹29.60 lakh
    (Reason: non-compliance; not transactional fraud.)

3.2 E-wallet scrutiny after BluSmart collapse
Following BluSmart’s EV collapse, the RBI is reviewing closed-loop wallets (which currently fall outside PPI rules). Potential outcomes being discussed: escrow mandates or PPI-like guidelines to better protect consumer funds if such wallet issuers fail.

Final takeaways — what you should do now

  • If you used AmEx Gold for fuel to meet multipliers, identify alternate spend categories or cards for your 6X strategy.

  • Tata Neu Infinity holders: check your quarterly statement for voucher thresholds and plan spend accordingly (lounge swipe convenience is gone).

  • Premium banking customers: if invited to Kotak Solitaire, assess credit lines and family coverage vs fees.

  • Watch limited Axis/AmEx offers before 30 June 2025 (food/grocery codes + Yatra Saturdays) — they can be valuable if used correctly.

  • Monitor RBI guidance on e-wallets — changes could affect closed-loop wallet functionality and consumer protection.

  • If you hold Fi Money balance and redeem for Air India rewards, remember conversion is irreversible and takes 3–5 business days.
